Guidelines for a Good Goalkeeper Training
- Each session should be appropriate for players’ age and ability levels.
- The smaller the group, the more focus on the goalkeepers. The ideal size for a training technique is two to four goalkeepers. The group can be bigger for condition training.
- Make practice interesting, intense, focused and varied. Depending on the age level.
- Always move from easy to hard. From simple to complex.
- Practice new techniques and then gradually combine them.
- Combine coordination training with goalkeeper technique training.
- The warm-up should always focus on a specific concept.
- Exercises should be short, intense and demand full concentration instead of long sets with lots of repetitions.
- Exercises should approximate actual match play.
- Goalkeepers need goals in every exercise (even if they’re just two cones).
- Include motivational exercises at the end of every practice session.
The Importance of Good Technique for a Goalkeeper
Your goal is to have a successful career as a goalkeeper? Well, good technique is one of the single most important prerequisites. Therefore, a major objective of youth goalkeeper training is to execute the movement involved in goalkeeping techniques as automatically as possible. Black Eagles professional coaches know that no goalkeeper can master all or even most of the goalkeeping techniques perfectly and how far to push them in terms of technical development.
Goalkeepers should strive to improve their skills
Just like field players, goalkeepers should strive to improve their technical and tactical skills.
Coaches have to be resourceful. Sometimes a sympathetic educator and sometimes a tough drill instructor. However, a continuous and structured training program will always be effective in the long run.
